Lords of Death
Continuously active across more than two decades of open-world PvP MMOs, from Ultima Online in 1997 through Darkfall, Guild Wars 2, and Albion Online. The guild site and community remain standing. Per direct member accounts from TheMercs, LoD were long-running rivals and periodic allies, opponents in some games and campaigns and teammates in others across the years.
Lords of Death, tagged LoD, are one of the longest continuously operating open-world PvP guilds in the MMO record. Founded in 1997 on the Ultima Online Baja server, during the original Felucca-era full-loot ruleset, the guild built an identity around one thing and kept it for more than twenty years: NA-based, open-world, free-for-all conquest PvP. Two published lines carry the culture, the tagline "We make dead people" and the motto "LoD 4 Life."
The guild's arc runs through the games that defined open-world PvP for their respective eras. Ultima Online set the doctrine. Shadowbane, the guild-versus-guild siege game built around razing rival cities, kept the core sharp through the early 2000s. Darkfall is where LoD reached its widest recognition: the guild held political dominance over the North American server through 2009 and 2010 and stayed the major server power until it moved on. From there LoD carried the same instinct into Darkfall: Unholy Wars, Guild Wars 2, and Albion Online, alongside stints in other competitive titles.
The Darkfall era is also where LoD's path crossed directly with TheMercs. TheMercs' own published record lists Lords of Death among their Darkfall opponents, and per direct member accounts from the Mercs side, the relationship across the years was more layered than a simple rivalry. LoD and TheMercs were long-running rivals and periodic allies, fielded against each other in some games and campaigns and lined up on the same side in others. That kind of shifting, decades-long relationship between two small elite conquest guilds is characteristic of the tight open-world PvP scene both came up in, where the same names keep reappearing across a dozen games.
The guild's membership doctrine reads like the Mercs' own: put guild before self, keep a thick skin, follow directions in the field, and clear a bar to get in. The result is the same kind of durability. Where most guilds are tied to a single game and dissolve when it fades, LoD treated the game as interchangeable and the organization as the constant. The history preserved on the guild's own site, told through the longtime leader Balinor, is the through-line: two decades, many games, one tag.
Editorial note: the Lords of Death record here is drawn from the guild's own published history and cross-referenced against TheMercs' Darkfall-era record and direct member accounts. The relational detail between LoD and TheMercs reflects Mercs-side member testimony. Additional firsthand memory, specific campaigns, and named members are welcome through the submission form.
