Battlefield 2042 launched in 2021 to one of the rougher receptions in the franchise's history. The two years of post-launch live service work substantially repaired the game, and the Portal mode (which lets players access remixed versions of Battlefield 3, Battlefield 1942, and Bad Company 2 alongside the modern title) became the unexpected hook for the long-tail audience. The next mainline Battlefield is in development.
