What full loot actually teaches you
The thing nobody tells you about full loot is that it is not about the loot. It is about what the loss does to your relationship with the game. The lesson travels. The current extraction wave is half learning it.
The thing nobody tells you about full loot, when you first come to it, is that it is not about the loot. The loot is the surface. The loot is what the game systems use to communicate the underlying mechanic. The actual mechanic is what the threat of loss does to your relationship with the game while you are playing it.
This column is about that mechanic. The lesson travels across UO Felucca, Darkfall, EVE, Tarkov, Hunt, and any current or future game that ships with a full-loss ruleset. The current extraction wave is half learning it. The half they are getting is interesting. The half they are missing is the more interesting half.
What loss does to attention
Sit with this. A player in a non-loss MMO walks into a contested zone with a baseline level of attention. The same player in a full-loot MMO walks into the same zone with elevated attention. The elevation is not anxious. It is alert. Sounds carry more information. Map awareness expands. Pre-aim discipline tightens. Every input the player makes is preceded by a half-second more of evaluation than it would have been in a non-loss context.
The elevation is the entire point. The game has trained the player, through the threat of loss, to engage with its systems at a higher resolution than the player would otherwise have engaged with them. The player learns the systems faster, retains the learning longer, and develops habits that travel into adjacent games.
Full-loot, in this sense, is a learning machine. The output is not loot. The output is the player.
What loss does to community
Second-order effect. A player who has been through a few real loot losses, in a community where those losses are visible to other players, becomes a different kind of community member. The player has skin in the game in a way that non-loss MMO players do not. The player is more careful about reputation, because reputation affects who will trade with them, who will repair their gear, who will run together against a third party. The player is more aware of the social fabric that surrounds the game's systems, because the social fabric is part of how the player manages risk.
This produces a specific kind of community. UO Felucca had it. Darkfall had it. EVE has it. The community is denser per capita than non-loss MMO communities are. People know each other. Reputation persists. Disputes have weight. The community is also harsher, less forgiving, and less hospitable to drive-by participation.
These properties are connected. The same threat of loss that produces the dense reputation network is the threat of loss that drives away players who do not want to participate in a dense reputation network. The trade is real and the trade is durable. Every full-loot game has it. No non-loss game has ever fully replicated it.
What loss does to design
Third-order effect, the one that travels furthest. Full-loot game design has to manage the loss curve. Too steep a loss curve and the population bleeds out. Too shallow a loss curve and the threat model collapses, taking the elevated attention and the dense community with it.
UO Felucca shipped a steep curve and partially recovered through Trammel's split. Darkfall shipped a steep curve and ran an active skill system that partially compensated by making losses time-shaped rather than progression-shaped. EVE ships a moderate curve and absorbs losses through the alliance-level economic infrastructure. Tarkov ships a steep curve and uses scheduled wipes to flatten the long-term progression. Hunt ships a moderate curve through the hunter inheritance system that softens individual deaths.
Each of these solutions is a different point on the same design curve. The shape of the curve is the most important variable in any full-loot or extraction-style game. Get the curve right and the game retains its audience for years. Get the curve wrong and the population peaks early and bleeds out fast.
The current extraction shooter wave is, to my read, half-learning the lesson. Tarkov got the curve broadly right. Hunt got it right. The other entries in the category are still figuring out where their curves should land, and the wrong choice is more common than the right one. The default failure mode is shipping a steep curve without a flattening mechanism, which produces an early population spike followed by a measurable bleed.
What this teaches the player
Five things. Each of them travels.
One. Risk evaluation. The player learns to evaluate the expected value of an engagement before initiating, with a calibration that non-loss games do not produce.
Two. Sound discipline. The player learns to listen for information rather than ambient texture, with a precision that non-loss games do not require.
Three. Map awareness. The player learns to hold a mental model of the surrounding terrain at a resolution that non-loss games do not reward.
Four. Reputation thinking. The player learns to think about how their actions will affect future trades, future cooperations, and future encounters with the same other players, in ways that non-loss games structurally do not surface.
Five. Loss tolerance. The player learns to accept loss as part of the cost of participation, rather than as a personal failure to be avoided. This is a different psychological relationship to a game, and the players who develop it tend to play games more deeply and for longer than players who do not.
These five outputs are the actual product of full-loot games. The loot is the delivery mechanism. The output is what the player carries away.
Where the current wave will land
A forecast, more confident than I usually want to be. The current extraction shooter wave will sort itself into three buckets within the next two years.
Bucket one. Games that ship the right loss curve and retain audiences for years. Tarkov is already there. Hunt is already there. The next entry, whoever ships it, will land here only if the design team understands what the curve actually does for the player.
Bucket two. Games that ship a steep curve without flattening and watch the audience peak then bleed. Most current entries are at risk of landing here. The default failure mode is to underestimate how much flattening the population will tolerate before they drift to a less punishing alternative.
Bucket three. Games that try to soften the loss curve to broaden the audience and end up shipping a non-loot game wearing a loot game's marketing. This is the worst outcome. The audience that came for the threat model leaves. The audience that came for the broader appeal does not retain at the rates the audience-broadening was supposed to deliver. The game ships, fails to find an identity, and sunsets.
A useful test. Ask the design team, in plain language, what the loss curve does for the player. If the answer is "increases tension," the team has not thought about it enough. If the answer is "produces sustained alert attention that compounds into player skill development over months," the team understands the system. The first answer is common. The second answer is rare.
Verdict
Full loot is a learning machine. The output is the player. The audience that has been through it carries habits and instincts that travel into every adjacent game and stay with the player for years. The current extraction wave is the genre's third or fourth attempt at building games that produce this kind of output at scale. The mechanism works when the loss curve is right and fails when it is wrong. There is no shortcut and there is no replacement. Get the curve right or accept the population cost. Those are the only two options the genre has ever had.
