Movement is half the kill
Quake duel theory was solved before most current shooter audiences were born. The principles travel. The current extraction shooter wave is closer to right than the hero shooter wave was, and movement matters again.
Movement was solved before most people writing about competitive gaming today were born. Quake duel theory, Tribes skiing, the speed builds in early Asheron's Call: the answers were already on the table by 2001. Every shooter since has been re-deriving subsets of those principles, sometimes well, sometimes badly. The current extraction shooter wave is closer to right than the hero shooters were. Movement matters again. The genre is healthier when movement matters.

What Quake duel theory actually figured out
The mechanics. Strafe-jump optimization let a player exceed the game's nominal max ground speed by chaining mouse-aim-and-input combinations that converted strafe inputs into forward velocity. Rocket-jumping converted self-damage into elevation. Plasma climbs and ramp jumps extended both. The result was a movement system whose ceiling was not stated in the game's documentation, was not visible to a casual player, and required active study to even recognize. The ceiling was high. The gap between players who studied it and players who did not was enormous.
The duel format compounded the gap. A duel between two players who had each studied movement was a tactical match where map control, item timing, and engagement initiation all depended on movement options. A duel where only one player had studied movement was structurally over before it started. The skilled player could exit any engagement on demand, force engagements at item-timing windows, and convert any positioning advantage into a kill.
This is solved territory. The community wrote it down. The CPMA mod codified some of it. The strafe-jump tutorial videos from the late 1990s and early 2000s laid the rest out. None of it was lost. All of it was available to subsequent shooter designers to build on.
What subsequent shooters did with it
Counter-Strike inherited some of it. Strafe-jumping, scout-jumping, surf maps as a movement training environment. The competitive CS scene has always taken movement seriously, and the broader CS audience has always understood that movement matters even if they do not personally optimize for it.
Hero shooters inherited the least. Overwatch's mobility was bounded by hero ability cooldowns. Movement skill outside of the cooldown structure mattered far less than ability sequencing did. Marvel Rivals continues this pattern. The hero shooter genre, at its peak audience, mostly traded movement skill for ability complexity. The trade was profitable for the audience size. The trade was costly for the competitive depth.
Tactical shooters split the difference. Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege, and Counter-Strike 2 all retain movement as a meaningful skill axis but bound it within constraints (utility usage, operator picks, structural map design) that prevent movement from being the dominant axis. This is workable. The audience is large. The competitive depth is real. The ceiling, however, is below the Quake ceiling. That is a deliberate design choice.
Battle royales recovered some of the movement ceiling. Apex Legends specifically built a movement system that reaches back toward Quake-lineage techniques. Wall jumps, slide-jumps, the tap-strafe controversy, the broader culture of movement training: Apex is the closest modern shooter to a Quake-lineage skill ceiling on movement, and the audience that has stuck with the game for years is largely the audience that values that ceiling.
The current extraction shooter wave
The interesting development. Tarkov, Hunt, and the broader extraction shooter category have, deliberately or accidentally, restored movement as a meaningful skill axis in ways the hero shooters did not.
The mechanism is different from Quake's. Tarkov movement is heavy. Stamina, carry weight, and weapon ergonomics constrain movement options. The result is not the high-speed tactical movement of Quake, but a slower kind of positioning skill where map knowledge, sound discipline, and pre-aim discipline matter. The positioning skill is movement skill in a different vocabulary.
Hunt is closer to Quake in feel. Sound design is the dominant feedback channel, but the movement system rewards positioning discipline at a level that the hero shooter audience would find punishing. Players who have not studied Hunt's pacing will lose engagements they thought they were winning. Players who have studied it will exit engagements they were nominally losing.
Both genres respect the player's study time. The hero shooter genre, at scale, did not. The hero shooter audience is fine with that trade. The extraction shooter audience demands the harder one.
This is healthier for the genre. Movement skill is one of the easier-to-study and harder-to-fake competitive axes that shooters can build around. When the genre forgets to put movement in the design, the genre's competitive depth narrows. When the genre remembers, the depth widens. The current wave is remembering.
Where this should go next
Two predictions. Both are tentative.
One. The next major extraction shooter, whichever it ends up being, will have to ship with a movement system that rewards study. Players who came up through Tarkov and Hunt have internalized the expectation. A new title that ships without it will lose those players within a quarter. The Marathon prerelease conversation has not, as of this writing, focused on movement design enough to forecast confidently. The forecast is that Marathon will live or die on whether the movement system carries the weight Tarkov and Hunt set.
Two. The hero shooter category, if it wants to recover competitive depth, will have to find a movement axis that the ability cooldown structure does not flatten. Marvel Rivals and Deadlock are both in early enough states that they could, theoretically, lean into movement design. The early signs suggest neither will. The hero shooter audience is comfortable with the cooldown-driven combat the genre has trained them on. The category will retain that audience and accept the depth ceiling that comes with it.
What this should mean to a reader who does not optimize movement
Most readers do not. That is fine. The competitive games are still interesting at the audience level even if the reader does not personally engage with the movement skill axis. The point of this column is not to tell anyone they should learn to strafe-jump. The point is to surface why some games hold longer-term audiences and others churn through them.
Games with high movement ceilings retain serious players for years. Games without them retain casual players for months. The trade is real. The trade is also a design choice, not an accident. Designers who choose the high ceiling are choosing to lose some of the casual audience in exchange for the long tail of serious players. Designers who choose the low ceiling are choosing the opposite trade.
There are no neutral choices here. There never have been.
Verdict
Quake solved movement. The shooters that came after either built on it, partially adopted it, or ignored it. The ones that built on it have the deepest competitive cultures. The ones that ignored it have the largest casual audiences. The current wave of extraction shooters is the first time in fifteen years the genre has, at scale, prioritized the deeper trade. The genre is healthier for it. The genre is more interesting for it. Watch the next major extraction launch carefully. The next twelve months will tell you whether the recovery sustains or whether the audience drifts back to the cooldown-and-ability shooters that ask less of them.
